Bulgarian Potato Thieves

I always love coming across stories involving Bulgaria in my local newspapers. I thought this one was funny and had to share:

Greece nabs potato thieves from Bulgaria
THESSALONIKI, Greece- The farmer had to stay up at night to guard his field, and get help from police, but he’s finally stopped the foreign marauders who were stealing his potatoes.

Five men and four women from neighboring Bulgaria were arrested early Sunday while digging up and loading 800 kilograms (1,760 pounds) of stolen potatoes into a van in Ochyro, a village in northern Greece near the Bulgarian border, police say.

The farmer, who was keeping an overnight watch for the thieves, got help from police and border guards after he lost 14 metric tons (15.3 tons) of potatoes the previous week.

More than 200 empty potato sacks and digging forks were found in the van and confiscated.

Police are now looking for other thieves in the region _ these ones targeting olive groves.

  1. I think these thieves are gypsies 🙂 It definitely looks like a typical gypsy crime.

  2. It’s not funny at all!The people are poor,of course this is not an excuse for theft….Well I am sorry that these news make foreigners think bad things about the Bulgarians,as general, and this is so not true!

    • Sorry if I offended you! What I meant was that it’s funny that stories so random and odd end up in my local newspapers.

Although, my impression of the article was that the thieves had quite the set-up going on. I mean they were trying to steal nearly 2,000 lbs (800 kilos) of potatoes. That took some planning. I think those who are poor and stealing to feed their families would not have such a large scale operation going on, but I could be wrong.

And this article doesn’t make me think anything bad about Bulgaria or Bulgarians. I love both!

      • No,don’t get me wrong,I was not offended, I am just sorry that such news will make wrong impression in most of the people, reading this article. You are emotionally committed to Bulgaria and particularly one Bulgarian guy, which is so great:),that’s why this info does not shape your attitute:).I hope that you’ll find one day something positive about Bulgaria in your local newspapers:),or by that time, you will be already ib Bulgaria:).
