A Visit to Vitosha

Vitosha is a large mountain on the outskirts of Sofia which is home to a small skiing resort, monastery, restaurants, and more. On this day (in mid-January) we were trying to reach Dragalevtsi Monastery but the roads were way too icy and snowy. There were also kids sledding down the – roads so trying to drive up them would have been crazy anyway. We decided to check the monastery out another day and just pose for some photos instead. There were people everywhere! It’s definitely a popular spot for locals on winter weekends!

  1. The monastery is nothing special in my opinion, also we were told that you have to call ahead if you want to go inside the gates otherwise it is locked.

    • That is good to know! It’s not the easiest place to get to even when there isn’t snow on the roads (from what I hear), so getting up there and being locked out would be awful! Looks like we’ll be moving Dragalevtsi to the bottom of our must-visit monastery list!

  2. I have a bittersweet relationship with snow. Its gorgeous but so cold. Vitosha sounds interesting. Maybe i’ll come visit. Is it difficult to travel between Sofia and Varna?
