Over the past few years I have become very interested in makeup and beauty products. I can almost entirely blame this change in myself (the girl who didn’t wear a lick of makeup until she was about 20-years-old) on the YouTube “beauty community.” Essentially, this community is group of women (and some teen girls) who make videos on beauty-related topics. I stumbled upon a few “gurus” several years back and I have been addicted ever since. It’s a guilty pleasure that I don’t see myself giving up anytime soon!
Typical video topics include: makeup tutorials, shopping hauls, empties (products they have used up), monthly favorites, blog-like tags, and celebrity-inspired looks.
Because of the huge success of many beauty gurus (Michelle Phan, the original YouTube beauty guru, is now a millionaire because of her video sponsorship’s and partnership with YouTube), every 13-year-old with a camera and some makeup now plops themselves in down and talks about beauty, and more power to them!
One afternoon a few weeks back I was lovingly playing with my makeup and decided to do a post on my favorite beauty products. It’s a far cry from actually making a YouTube beauty video, but I don’t see that ever happening!
This list isn’t comprehensive as the vast majority of what I own is back in Utah, but these are the things I love the most and chose to haul over the Atlantic with me.
I like reading blog posts like these because it helps me discover new products and hear people’s opinions.
Alrighty. Here we go!
As a redhead, I have to be a bit more careful when it come to the makeup colors I wear. I’m a fairly conservative person when it comes to this stuff anyway, so I am ALL about the neutrals! It’s rather sick how much eyeshadow I have, but I can’t seem to help myself!
-Too Faced Natural Eye Palette
-Wet ‘n’ Wild trio in Walking on Eggshells
-Maybelline Color Tattoo (cream shadow) in Bad to the Bronze
-Urban Decay Naked Palette (I bought Naked 2 online awhile back and can’t wait to get home and use it!)
I was never into lip gloss or the like until pretty recently. I still don’t own any lipstick, but I have quite a few glosses and stains. I am more a chapstick type of girl!
– Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm
-EOS lip balm in Sweet Mint (I think that’s the name!)
-Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey
-Philosophy Lip Shine in Vanilla Birthday Cake
I can’t stand having bare nails for very long. I love painting my nails and tend to gravitate towards reds and nudes. A little glitter now and then is nice too! My favorite brand is Essie. It’s a little on the expensive side (no where near the $14 I paid for that Butter London polish) but the formula is amazing. I have far more nail polish then I could ever use in one lifetime. I try to use what I have and not buy new, but with each season I add to my collection!
Nail polish bottles are heavy, so I only packed a few when moving to Bulgaria. These are some of my go-tos at the moment, but the shades will change when spring arrives!
-Essie Penny Talk
-Essie Bahama Mama
-Essie Scarlet O’Hara
-China Glaze Prism
-OPI The One That Got Away (Katy Perry Collection)
-Butter London Wallis (love this color but do not like the formulation of the brand or the price)
-Seche Vite Top Coat
Perfumes and scents are a tricky one for me. I used to get major headaches and even feel sick to my stomach whenever I was near someone with a perfume on. Not surprisingly, I never wore any scents myself–until a few years ago when Vince bought me a bottle of Armani Code for my birthday. I had fallen in love with the scent from a magazine sample and he was nice enough to order me a bottle and have it delivered with a cute note. I only wore the tiniest amount but I think I eventually built up my tolerance and now I can wear it as much as I want. I am still quite sensitive to scents, however, so when I find one I can handle I have to make it a part of my tiny, but growing, collection. I am a sucker for Bath and Body Works in general, so I have a lot of their body sprays, but I never seem to wear them.
Sephora was having a deal a few weeks ago and I ordered my newest favorite perfume, Chloe. I fell in love with it while on our cruise and would visit the perfume shop on the ship daily to spray myself with it. I won some money from the casino (not to toot my own horn, but I rock at Roulette) and was going to buy it but I didn’t in the end. I regretted it from then on, so I am now happy to have it and am excited to get home and give it a go!
The only perfumes I own (but they’re all-time favorites!)
-Bulgari BLV II
-Miss Dior Cherie
I am pretty lazy when it comes to my hair. I have thick, wavy hair that is quite frizzy at times. I never blow dry it and try to limit heat tools because I want to limit damage. I do, however, straighten it every so often when I simply can’t handle the frizz anymore!
-GHD Professional Straightener (the BEST straightener in the world and totally worth the money!)
-Orofluido hair oil (I hopped on the hair oil bandwagon a few years ago and I love ’em!)
-Frederik Fekkai Glossing Cream (not pictured because it was in Smolyan and I took these photos when we were still living in Sofia).
These get the job done and don’t irritate my sometimes-sensitive skin.
-Sonia Kashuk Eye Makeup Remover
-Equate Exfoliating Cleansing Towelettes
Lush is a new addition to my world. Salt Lake City’s first Lush stores opened up over last summer and I was able to visit both before moving to BG. Lush’s body products are all-natural and handmade in Canada. Many of their products, like the Honey I Washed the Kids soaps, have cult followings. I went slightly mad over the heavenly honey smell and thought it was OK to spend nearly $9.00 on a small bar of soap. The little tin contains what’s left of a juniper sage shampoo bar ($10.00). I think that product is worth the money because you get 60-90 washes out of it and it can be used on the body and not just hair.
I am going to try and be good and steer clear of Lush when I am back in UT, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to resist! I really love their stuff! If I had a nice, big bathtub… Oh boy, all bets would be off! Their bath bombs and bath melts are to.die.for.
