Girl Meets Bulgaria

Musings of an American expat in Bulgaria (with detours in Utah and Alaska)

Beauty Favorites

Over the past few years I have become very interested in makeup and beauty products. I can almost entirely blame this change in myself (the girl who didn’t wear a lick of makeup until she was about 20-years-old) on the YouTube “beauty community.” Essentially, this community is group of women (and some teen girls) who make videos on beauty-related topics. I stumbled upon a few “gurus” several years back and I have been addicted ever since. It’s a guilty pleasure that I don’t see myself giving up anytime soon!

Typical video topics include: makeup tutorials, shopping hauls, empties (products they have used up), monthly favorites, blog-like tags, and celebrity-inspired looks.

Because of the huge success of many beauty gurus (Michelle Phan, the original YouTube beauty guru, is now a millionaire because of her video sponsorship’s and partnership with YouTube), every 13-year-old with a camera and some makeup now plops themselves in down and talks about beauty, and more power to them!

One afternoon a few weeks back I was lovingly playing with my makeup and decided to do a post on my favorite beauty products. It’s a far cry from actually making a YouTube beauty video, but I don’t see that ever happening!

This list isn’t comprehensive as the vast majority of what I own is back in Utah, but these are the things I love the most and chose to haul over the Atlantic with me.

I like reading blog posts like these because it helps me discover new products and hear people’s opinions.

Alrighty. Here we go!

As a redhead, I have to be a bit more careful when it come to the makeup colors I wear. I’m a fairly conservative person when it comes to this stuff anyway, so I am ALL about the neutrals!  It’s rather sick how much eyeshadow I have, but I can’t seem to help myself!

-Too Faced Natural Eye Palette

-Wet ‘n’ Wild trio in Walking on Eggshells

-Maybelline Color Tattoo (cream shadow) in Bad to the Bronze

-Urban Decay Naked Palette (I bought Naked 2 online awhile back and can’t wait to get home and use it!)

Randomly Me Monday: Volume Nine | 10 Day You Challenge

I’m back again with a Randomly Me post and the 10 Day You Challenge.

This one is going to be short and sweet {probably}.

Seven wants:

1) A baby— Yep. I am baby hungry and not ashamed to admit it! Soon… Soon…

2) A return trip to Scotland–I visited in 2004 when I was 18 years old and it has embedded itself deep into my heart. I look forward to visiting with my hubby and experiencing more of that famous Scottish charm (and sexy as hell accent!).

3) A successful career–Ideally, when I have kids I would love to stay home until they are older. But if that isn’t in the cards, I hope to have a fulfilling career in some sort of tourism, hospitality, or recreation capacity. I would love to stay with Princess in a year round position, whether it be in California, Seattle, or Alaska. I would also love to have my own business selling my handmade jewelry or something else I handcraft. I have also contemplated returning to school to get my Masters degree. Oh! And maybe work as a photographer. Clearly I have not narrowed down my plans!

4) Visit every continent–I once had this as a goal for before I got married, but obviously that didn’t work out!

5) Better my health–AKA lose weight and become more active! I want to be the best me possible.

6) Accomplish all my 30 Before 30 goals–I am slowing making progress and have about 3.5 years to go!

7) Stay passionate–I think having passions in life, whatever they may be, keeps us young, interesting, and happy. I have mine and I am sure I will develop more as I get older.

Up next week: six places (SO hard to nail down for a travel bum like me!)

10 Day You Challenge posts:

ten secrets, nine loves, eight fears

Randomly Me Monday: Volume Seven | 10 Day You Challenge

ten secrets

Continuing the 10 Day You Challenge today with nine loves

1) Travel–Honestly, when I think of the one overriding love or passion in my life, traveling and exploring the world is the first thing to come to mind. There really isn’t anywhere on earth I wouldn’t love to explore. I am forever planning my next trip and dreaming about the new experiences I will encounter. It really doesn’t matter if it’s a road trip somewhere close or a trip halfway around the world: I am in! To get really specific, out of everywhere I have been, Scotland takes the cake as my favorite destination. I was only there a few days, but the breathtaking countryside and genuinely warm people burrowed their way deep into my heart and soul. I would love to live there one day.

2) Photography–I can still remember my first camera, a cheapo 110 film Kodak given to me by my grandparents when I was a young child. People have often told me how good my photographs are, but until a few years ago I never really saw it. Now I feel like my personal photography style and unique way of seeing the world is coming through in the photos I take. I still have a HUGE amount to learn about the art itself (and using my camera in manual mode), but I feel that this is what makes photography great–there is always room for learning and growing.

3) Arts and crafts–Ever since I was little I have loved making things with my hands. I cannot draw or paint for the life of me, but I love making jewelry, scrapbooking, and doing needlework. Now by no means am I fantastic at any of them (although I am pretty proud of some of my jewelry pieces), but I sure try! My dream job would be to work out of a home studio making something beautiful for the world to enjoy. And while it may not be an art or craft, I enjoy cooking and am looking forward to improving my talents (with my husband as guinea pig, of course!).

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

I’m baaaaack…

For another round of Ramblinsg and Photos Scavenger Hunt Sunday!

I had a blast coming up with ideas for last weeks prompts, and while I did not have as much time this week to devote to “the hunt,” (had to hit up my archives for most of my prompts) I had fun nonetheless, and I definitely think this exercise is helping to improve my creativity and photography skills. It’s fun going back through old photos and seeing how my style has developed.

Here we go!

A delicious crab leg dinner courtesy of my awesome supervisor, K., in Alaska. Crab legs have got to be one of my most favorite foods of all time!

Well. Salt Lake City got its first big snowfall of the season this weekend. I happened to be babysitting again and we all know a 6-year old can’t resist that white, powdery stuff! So, we bundled up and headed outside for some wintery fun!

Fall is disguised as winter these days here in Utah! I don’t think all the flowers got the memo and were blindsided by the chilly weather this weekend.

Red Fort, Old Delhi, India–The Diwan-i-Khas, a large area once used for imperial audiences, is a pavilion clad completely in marble, the pillars are decorated with floral carvings and inlay work with many semi-precious stones. The Red Fort is where Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (builder of the Taj Mahal) was imprisoned until his death.

I have been spending a lot of time lately going through my travel photo archive, and have begun to wade through the hundreds of photos I took in India. I honestly could have done this entire scavenger hunt with photos I took while there, but I thought I would contain myself and only do a couple!  I am working on getting them organized and uploaded to my Flickr feed, so stay tuned!

Another photo taken at Red Fort in India. It’s one of my favorites from the entire trip.

Yeah, I know… 3 archive photos this week. Not exactly following the rules. In my defense, the snow had me a little depressed and not really in the mood to do anything other than lay about under warm blankets watching movies!

I will do better next week. I promise!

Comment and let me know what you think of my photos!

The Amazing Race

My all-time favorite TV show–the Emmy-award winning The Amazing Race–is back on and has been for over a month! I don’t watch much TV these days, so I had no idea there was a new season.

Luckily, CBS offers the episodes online; so I started watching them today.

I cannot imagine how amazing it would be to be a contestant on the show. I wouldn’t even know what to do with myself! They hit at least 10 countries per season and compete in some of the coolest challenges.

Honestly, I would be on the show just to race and be completely satisfied if I just made it to the last country. The million dollar prize would only be icing on the cake. Maybe Vince and I will have to apply to be on the show! 😉

This season the 11 teams include: pro snowboarders, former Survivor winners, grandparent farmers, a former NFL player, gay flight attendants and former Las Vegas showgirls.

Seems like  it’s going to be a good season!

In the two episodes I have watched, the teams flew from Los Angeles to Taipei, Taiwan then on to Jakarta, Indonesia.

I am a huge travel freak, so this is one show I do not feel guilty about lazing about to watch!

If you’ve never seen it, check it out!

I also hear there is a Bulgarian-version of the show. Totally going to watch it as well!

I’ve Caught the Bug

…the fall crafting bug!

There’s just something about this time of year that makes me want to put on my best Martha Stewart act, shut myself up in a warm house and create something pretty or useful!

(I can’t wait until I can have my own studio/crafting space one day.)

Heaven knows I have enough supplies on hand f0r projects to last throughout winter, but of course I have my eye on some things that require a trip to the craft store and/or some online shopping.

Thanks to Pinterest I am able to “bookmark” ideas that I want to revisit. That website has definitely rekindled my love affair with a glue gun and acrylic paints (among other things)!

A few ideas at the top of my list:

Earring display

Upcycled Tshirt Scarf

Ruffled Camera Strap

Zipper Bracelet

Recycled Light Bulb Vases (no link to source)

Ruffled Infinity Scarf

Giant Granny Square Blanket

And oh so many more!

I’m also a font addict these days! I love handwritten type fonts and can’t seem to stop downloading them! The memory on my laptop is starting to wish I would slow down. If you want to grab a bunch for yourself, check out a few of my favorite free-font websites: dafont and kevindandamanda. Amanda (of kevinandamanda) is one crafty lady and her blog is a must-see! The first three crafts above are actually hers!

I have had a lot of fun lately making new blog headers using lots of different fonts.

Lastly, I am itching to be elbow deep in floury dough and sweet batter. So many fun fall recipes out there.

Does autumn make you want to create? Have your eye on some fun projects?

Comment and let me know!

Playing Around in Photoshop

Seeing as I am currently among the ranks of the unemployed and find myself with an abundance of extra time on my hands, I have finally started to play around in Photoshop CS5 (a frivolous purchase to be sure).

My friend A. and I went to Gardner Village yesterday morning to snap some photos of her adorable twin niece and nephew. I got a few of some feathery friends nearby as well.

For these photos I used some of the Pioneer Woman’s Photoshop actions. I love that woman!

What do you think?

October is here and that makes me happy. Fall is my favorite season by far. Lots more photos to come!
