The Grammy Awards were last night and Mumford and Sons won Album of the Year for Babel. If you’ve been a reader for long at all you have heard me fangirl over M&S. Love ’em! They totally deserved the award–Babel is great.

Anywho, on to the other tunes finding their way into my head lately…

My friend K. introduced me to The Civil Wars while she was visiting me here in BG and they are {were} wonderful. Unfortunately, the duo (John Paul White & Joy Williams) have gone their separate ways and based on their chilly acceptance speech during last nights Grammys for Safe and Sound, it doesn’t seem like they will be reuniting any time soon. I’m really enjoying all of their stuff, so I couldn’t narrow it down to just one song!

The Civil Wars–Barton Hollow

The Civil Wars–Poison & Wine

Taylor Swift featuring The Civil Wars–Safe & Sound

I’m indifferent towards Taylor; however, she sang this song beautifully and is a great match for The Civil Wars’ sound.

One of my favorite groups from back in the day (aka, when Garden State came out)–The Postal Service–has a reported new album coming out sometime this year. The electronic-style duo, led by Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard along with producer Jimmy Tamborello, just released a song, A Tattered Line of String–which was a cut from their previous album, Give Up. It’s…meh. However, I have high hopes for their new stuff!

What have you been listening to lately?

On Rotation

It’s been quite awhile since my last On Rotation post, so I figured I’d update you all on the music I’ve been enjoying lately.

I love reading posts like these from other bloggers because there is nothing better then being turned on to new bands or rediscovering old loves. Hopefully you find something here that is right up your alley!

The Lumineers – Ho Hey

Absolutely my favorite song and music video of the moment (those hats, white shirts, and suspenders? SEXY AS HELL!). I instantly think of my cute husband when I hear it because he calls me “sweetheart.”

Phoenix – 1901

This is one of those songs you here everywhere for awhile and you find yourself humming or singing it under your breath randomly. Then it goes away and you forget about it…until hearing it playing full blast in the mall and it’s stuck in your head again!

Hey Sexy Lady…Oppan Gangnam Style!

Alright. It had to be done…

A Gangnam Style post.

If you haven’t at least heard about this crazy popular internet meme, then I have to assume you are living under a rock. A fun hating rock.

Gangnam Style is the catchy song and A.W.E.S.O.M.E music video by the South Korean rapper, PSY.

It was released in mid-July and has since gone on to become one of the most recognized songs of the year. PSY and his iconic dance moves have taken over the world!

If you haven’t seen it (perhaps you were busy writing your memoir or were volunteering in the International Space Station and had no internet), here’s the vid-jeo:

Oh my. It’s just too amazing (hilarious) for words!

I have no clue what he’s saying, but it doesn’t matter. Not one bit.

The bright colors. Those thrusting dance moves.

Be still, my heart! 😉

And, of course, with any popular video, the parodies are cropping up left and right. Here are a few of my faves:

Gangnam Style Babies!

Gangnam Style w/ The Oregon Duck

I really want to learn the dance. It looks like it would be a great work out!

Oh, and my love for South Korea and desire to move there has grown even stronger!

Do you Gangnam Style?

W.

P.S. I am fairly sure even the astronauts on the Space Station have seen it. That’s how IT it is.

Shhh. I don’t want to jinx it, but the internet has actually been working in my room for a few weeks now.

Which means Spotify has made its way back into my daily routine.

After months of sitting on my butt in Bulgaria working, blogging, and surfing, I definitely think I needed a few months to unplug a bit and fill my mind (and time) with other things. Alaska is certainly the perfect place to do just that.

That being said, it’s nice being “back on the grid” a little more. I can actually work again (SEO article writing), blog again (albeit only here and there) and, of course, fall in love with new (to me) bands and albums.

Here’s what’s floatin’ my boat these days…

Emeli Sandé – Next to Me

Emeli Sandé – Wonder (Original Mix)

I LOVE her unique sound and catchy lyrics.

: : :

John Mayer – Shadow Days

John Mayer – The Age of Worry

Some people give me crap for it, but I adore John Mayer. Always have. Can’t see it changing anytime soon! This new album is good-not my favorite of his, but still really good.

For Your Listening Pleasure…

*UPDATE: Looks like the embed codes for the songs below may only work if you have Spotify. Will have to work on this soon! Sorry!**

My first post by this name (back in February) detailed my love affair with Mumford and Sons. Funny, it seems, that I find myself with a renewed obsession love for the band and their soulful lyrics since returning to Alaska.

I shared a video on that post of Mumford and Sons with the Avett Brothers and Bob Dylan at the Grammy’s. Looks like the video has since been taken down from YouTube (copyright reasons, of course), so the link it broken, but it’s well worth searching for online.

Along with Mumford and Sons, I am also loving more bluegrass and folk rock as well. Must be the fact that I live in the middle-of-nowhere-Alaska amongst beautiful woods, incredible wildlife, and the freshest air one could hope for.

All this sure lends itself well to the sounds of banjos, mandolins, fiddles, and raw voices.

But maybe it’s just me!

This, and some recent posts by Lauren on Baby in Bulgaria, pushed me to post about the sounds (of all genres) I’m enjoying right now.

Check them out…

(They’re all worth a listen, I swear!)

Mumford & Sons – Roll Away Your Stone

Mumford & Sons – Awake My Soul

The Avett Brothers – Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise

The Avett Brothers – Kick Drum Heart

Beirut – Santa Fe

Beirut – Nantes

Josh Ritter – The Curse

Josh Ritter – Girl In The War

***

That’s probably enough for now!

But now that I know how to embed songs into my posts, I might make this a regular series.

Please share your own recent music loves in the comments.

W.

For Your Listening Pleasure…

Not being a woman of few words, I couldn’t leave you with just a Wordless Wednesday today!

But I’ll keep this sort and sweet: watch this video. It’s 8:47 of sheer musical genius (mostly because Mumford and Sons brought their A game–Bob Dylan was eh.).

I think it’s from last year’s Grammy Awards.

There’s just something about Mumford and Son’s lyrics and sound that speaks to my soul. LOVE them.If you haven’t already, I highly recommend listening to some of their stuff. I mean really listening. Oh, their lyrics… just wow.

This is what I mean…

After The Storm :

And after the storm,
I run and run as the rains come
And I look up, I look up,
on my knees and out of luck,
I look up.

Night has always pushed up day
You must know life to see decay
But I won’t rot, I won’t rot
Not this mind and not this heart,
I won’t rot.

And I took you by the hand
And we stood tall,
And remembered our own land,
What we lived for.

And there will come a time,
you’ll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart,
but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see
what you find there,
With grace in your heart
and flowers in your hair.

And now I cling to what I knew
I saw exactly what was true
But oh no more.
That’s why I hold,
That’s why I hold with all I have.
That’s why I hold.

And I will die alone
and be left there.
Well I guess I’ll just go home,
Oh God knows where.
because death is just so full
and man so small.
Well I’m scared of what’s behind
and what’s before.

***

And another favorite of mine–just for the fun of it.

Awesome song. Great video (although my mom disagrees-pssh). Coldplay never lets me down.

Hope your Wednesday is rockin’!

W.

Malka Moma

I came across this video on YouTube a few years ago.

I watch/listen to it often, and it never fails to give me the chills and bring tears to my eyes.

The translations I can find online vary, but for the most part they agree that the lyrics are:

A young girl prays to god:

Give me please the eyes of a dove

Give me please the eyes of a dove

Give me please the wings of a falcon

Give me please the wings of a falcon

So I can fly over the River Duna

So I can fly over the River Duna

And I can find a love for me

Choir

god gave her wings of a falcon.

And she found a boy that she loves.

And she found a boy that she loves.

Nellie Andreeva has such an amazing voice. There are a few more of her songs on YouTube if you want to see more.

The more I hear traditional Bulgarian folk music, the more I realize just how beautiful the language truly is.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
